Tennessee trout stocking questions

Do I need a trout licence in Tennessee?

Yes, to fish for or keep trout you need the trout privilege on top of a fishing licence, unless your licence already includes it. The licence page on this site lists the prices.

What does “week of” mean on the TWRA schedule?

The date is the Sunday that starts the week. TWRA stocks those waters within the five days after it.

When will the 2027 trout stocking schedule be out?

TWRA has not published it yet. The schedule for a new year normally comes out in winter.

Can a stocking be cancelled?

Yes. TWRA postpones or cancels stockings for high water, weather and hatchery problems.

Where do the tailwater trout come from?

TWRA and federal hatcheries stock the tailwaters below TVA and Corps dams, where the water released from deep in the lake stays cold enough for trout all year.
