Brown trout in Tennessee

Brown trout grow bigger than rainbows in Tennessee’s tailwaters. The state record, 28 lb 12 oz, came from the Clinch River in 1988, and the South Holston has a strong population of wild browns. Several rivers have size limits built around them.

How to tell a brown trout

Golden brown to yellow sides with black and red spots, often with pale halos around them. Little or no spotting on the tail. Also called brown, German brown.
