Common questions
Tennessee river level questions
Where do these river levels come from?
From U.S. Geological Survey stream gauges, which record every 15 minutes. The readings are provisional until USGS reviews them.
What is the difference between flow and gauge height?
Flow is the volume of water passing the gauge each second, in cubic feet per second. Gauge height is the water surface at that gauge against a fixed point. Flow compares better between rivers; gauge height only compares with the same gauge.
Why do some gauges show no flow?
Some gauges only record height or temperature, usually on big rivers controlled by dams, where the dam’s release is the better flow figure. The lake pages show those releases.
Are the tailwaters below TVA dams on this page?
The flow below TVA and Corps dams follows the dam’s generation schedule, which is on each lake page under Tennessee lake levels.
River readings come from the U.S. Geological Survey and are provisional, as USGS publishes them. Forecasts come from the National Weather Service. Sunrise, sunset and moon phase are calculated for the location. Tennessee Fishing Spots is not affiliated with USGS or NWS.
